Achilles tendinitis is when the Achilles tendon becomes swollen, inflamed and painful at the heel. The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. It is used for walking, running and jumping. This tendon can become inflamed, most commonly as a result of overuse or arthritis. It can occur in walkers, runners or other athletes including basketballers due to repeated jumping.
The inflammation in the tendon as a result of arthritis is more common in middle aged and elderly people. Physiotherapy treatment for this condition can help reduce the inflammation, stretch the tendons and strengthen the calf muscles. Sometimes the biomechanics of the foot and ankle can contribute to Achilles tendon problems and orthotics (shoe inserts) may be required to correct the fault. We have a specialized orthotic prescription device known as GAITSCAN which can be used to assess your foot and a custom made orthotic is prescribed to correct the imbalances.
