Hip and Knee Joint Replacement
Hip or knee joint replacement is surgery to replace your hip or knee joint with an artificial joint. The artificial joint is called prosthesis. The damaged cartilage and bone in the hip or knee joint are removed and an artificial joint made of metal, ceramic or plastic is used. The most common reason to have a hip or knee joint replaced is to relieve severe arthritis pain.
Physiotherapy treatment following such surgery can help reduce pain and swelling and increase range and function of your new joint. Treatment may include mobilization and massage, acupuncture for pain relief, exercises to strengthen the muscles around the new joint. Hydrotherapy (water based exercises) may also be recommended. We also provide advice on how to return to normal daily activities after surgery.
